Reusing Taking their land

Copyright © 2026 Craig Talbert, for original project material to the extent copyright or similar rights apply and are held by him. Licenses authorized 2026-09-05. Third-party material is excepted as described below.

Component License
Original monograph, atlas case prose, explanatory graphics, and editorial/methods documentation Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)
Original structured research data: event attributes, coding, source-point assertions, evidence/decision ledgers, bibliography metadata, and statistical results Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)
Original software, including atlas application code, analysis/build scripts, tests, and stylesheets MIT

These grants apply to the original components in the repository and its distributed snapshots. A file can contain more than one component. In particular, original atlas narrative prose remains CC BY-SA 4.0 when embedded in JSON or HTML, whereas the structured research fields are CC BY 4.0. Third-party quotations and map geometry do not become our CC-licensed data. The software license does not override the licenses on embedded content.

Full terms are supplied in CC BY-SA 4.0, CC BY 4.0, and MIT.

What reuse permits

You may copy, teach with, translate, adapt, and commercially reuse the licensed material. For CC material, credit Craig Talbert, identify the work and its license, preserve supplied notices as required, and indicate changes. When sharing adaptations of the CC BY-SA material, use the same license or another license allowed by its ShareAlike terms. CC BY data and MIT software do not impose that ShareAlike condition.

No license requires publication of private edits. An independent study is not automatically an adaptation simply because it analyzes these data. The grants do not restrict facts or other public-domain material, or uses permitted by copyright exceptions. The license texts govern; this explanation adds no restrictions. CC permissions already received cannot be revoked while the recipient complies with the applicable terms.

Exceptions and third-party notices

Read Third-party notices before redistributing the atlas, source code, or mixed-content files. In particular:

Material is provided without warranties, as specified by the applicable license. Attribution must not imply endorsement. We claim no exclusive rights over historical facts or material that does not receive copyright protection.

Suggested citation

Craig Talbert. 2026. Taking their land: A chronological atlas of settlement and displacement. Cite the atlas build or statistical release identifier shown with the material and the access date. Project.

For the monograph, cite Craig Talbert, The Shape of Taking, the displayed working-draft version and publication build. For data, cite the release ID and, when practical, the downloaded file or bundle checksum. These citation details help reproducibility; they do not add license conditions. Translations and adaptations should identify their changes rather than imply they are the unchanged original.

Updating and preserving releases

The publication builder carries these notices into each new HTML/data build and the monograph PDF. The downloadable bundle includes this file, the license texts, third-party notices, and per-file component guidance in its manifest. Existing frozen statistical files are not rewritten to add headers: these licenses accompany their unchanged bytes. No archival DOI is claimed until one is actually issued.
