Project record

Updates

A dated record of research, atlas, and publication work.

New atlas case

Slave transport, contract work and island residence

The atlas adds a case on slave transport, contract work and residence in the Mascarenes and Seychelles. It spans 1638 to about 1920. The sources describe selected groups and periods. They do not show that every arrival was forced.

Two links show selected voyages in 1770 and 1807. The points are approximate place references. The arcs are not ship tracks. The departure port for the 1718 arrival in Bourbon is not mapped. Other routes and later fates remain unknown.

Slave transport and contract work remain separate. Some former workers bought small plots. The sources do not give one total for people forced to move, or deaths across this whole case. All eight fixed trait values and the family remain unchanged. Each trait has a source note.

The atlas has 540 cases and 552 stops. The active statistical roster still has 676 events. Eleven separate scientific entries remain inactive. The site keeps all 22 earlier update posts.

New atlas case

Kazakh flight and land loss, 1929–1934

The atlas adds a case on flight, forced returns and land loss in Kazakhstan from 1929 to 1934. State plans sought settled life, but many plans failed. The account keeps those plans separate from forced returns, local expulsions and pasture loss.

Pianciola argues that famine caused dependence and some settlement. He rejects violent settlement as the usual cause of the famine. He estimates that one-third of Kazakhs died in 1930–1933. The drop in the republic's Kazakh population also includes migration. These measures are separate. The sources do not give one total for people forced to move.

All eight trait values remain from the fixed model. Each has a source qualification. Filled cells show coding completion, not source confidence. The active statistical roster still has 676 events. The atlas has 539 cases and 551 stops.

New atlas case

Almoravid deportation in 1126 added

The atlas now includes the Almoravid deportation of Andalusi Christians to the Maghreb in 1126. The case covers named groups. These groups include families and church leaders. It does not cover every Christian in the named cities.

The account describes an order, armed pursuit, and legal actions after removal. A separate record concerns a church and its endowment. The full number displaced remains unknown. The sources do not establish a complete route or a replacement population.

The atlas has 538 cases and 550 stops. The sources have three links in the case. The active statistical release remains 676 events.

New atlas case

Maʻafu’s conquest and land reorganization in Lau added

The atlas now includes Maʻafu’s conquest and land changes in Lau from 1852 to 1869. The case has three phases. It covers war, changed rule, and measured land plots in named Lauan islands.

The sources show new tax and tribute ties. They also show plots for tax-paying men and some Tongan residents and warriors. They do not show that all residents left or that all land was seized. The number displaced, death share, and full land loss remain unknown.

The map uses regional context. Exact event geometry is unknown. Mago and Munia or Yanuyanu remain separate research leads. This atlas case is separate from the 676 active events.

New atlas case

Korean War civilian displacement added

The atlas now includes Korean War civilian displacement from 1950 to 1953. The case keeps summer flight and the winter retreat as distinct waves. It also separates refugees from North Korea from South Korean evacuees.

The source supports flight, limits on return, and new places of residence. It does not give one total for all people who moved. It also does not show one route, general title loss, or permanent exile for every civilian. Damaged number tables are not used.

Source and flight note update

Flight and refuge in the Moriori case

The Moriori case now has a note on flight and refuge. It covers the history of Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Mutunga. The note describes warfare pressure in Taranaki and later moves toward Rēkohu.

A link leads to the source and its limits. The account does not show that every traveller fled. The case keeps its account of the invasion, deaths, enslavement, and land loss.

Atlas and research update

Congo case and research updates

The atlas adds a case on refugee camp clearance in Congo in 1996 to 1997. The case separates deaths, forced flight, and return. The total number of affected people remains unknown.

The atlas now contains 535 cases and 545 stops. There are 77 known ordinary cases left and 64 separate holds.

The research ledger adds two Cameroon candidates: Bamum village expulsion and Ncharé conquest with land allocation. Their relation to one campaign remains unknown. A separate Tikar and Tumu lead lacks evidence of a land or residence loss. None of these records adds a public atlas case.

The separate statistical test now has five added events. The first comparison is due at 30 added events. The active statistical release still contains 676 events.

The updated discovery report lists search results and open questions. It does not claim a global coverage percentage.

Atlas release

New public case: Tawergha

The atlas adds the forced removal of Tawergha residents from their town in Libya in 2011. The case follows barriers to return and later return through 2025. Return did not mean full recovery.

The case keeps unknown values where the sources do not support a score or a map route. The atlas now contains 534 cases and 544 stops. There are 78 known ordinary cases left and 64 separate holds.

The dated discovery report keeps its earlier counts and search limits. This case update does not change that report or the frozen statistical release.

Research

New report: discovery status

A new dated report shows the current discovery search and its limits. It lists 1,280 saved search records. Of these, 24 contain located results, 19 contain no result in scope, and 17 have evidence or access limits.

The current cycle has 19 partial search attempts across eight era blocks. No block meets the full search floor. The first test recovered zero of three eligible pairs. Three other pairs were outside the source scope. Source gaps do not rule out faults in the search prompts or source selection.

This report does not add atlas cases. The live atlas remains at 533 cases and 543 stops.

Site

Play controls and sound

The play controls are in one bar. Site links are below the timeline. The sound keeps one key within a region. The key changes when the region changes. The atlas still has 533 cases and 543 stops.

Site update

Matching play buttons

The start screen now has two play buttons of the same size. Their arrows point in opposite directions. Their labels line up. The layout is correct on wide and narrow screens. The change keeps the same cases and playback order.

Research

Next search plan

We agreed on the next search plan. First, we will join the accepted group records in one index. Then we will examine which searches apply and do a test of how we choose the next search. Each work cycle must cover all periods that still need searches. New finds at the end of a search start a short follow-up with a stated scope. Checks of search results use a repeatable sample and expand when they find errors.

Site update

Project updates and RSS

The project now has an Updates page and an RSS feed. Each post has its own address. The archive shows the work date and the date we added the post. These posts give information about live releases and decisions about the project. Older posts use project records that have dates.

Research

More population and region records

·

All 676 source events now use one standard world region label. The population index now has stable records for 177 named groups. It has 343 links from groups to events. It also has five supported links between groups. Another 220 possible links do not have decisions. The full source list has 2,358 exact name leads, so the index is not complete.

Research

Sixty research topics have two searches

·

We used two separate search methods for 60 topics across regions, periods, and processes. The searches found candidates in 24 topics. The searches found no candidates in 19 topics within the stated limits. Sources or access did not permit complete searches for 17 topics. Another 1,220 topics still need both searches. The search program is still open.

Atlas release

New public case: Zanzibar property confiscation

·

The latest live atlas has a case on state seizure and transfer of property in Zanzibar from 1964 through September 1987. The source counts 1,565 properties. That number does not count people or households. The case does not use seized property as proof of expulsion, and questions about removal are open. This release has 533 cases and 543 stops. Another 79 known cases need text, and 64 cases have evidence or classification holds.

Atlas release

New public case: Beni and nearby Ituri villages

·

The live atlas now has a case on attacks in Beni Territory and nearby Ituri villages from January to 19 March 2021. The case reports an estimate of 40,000 newly displaced people. This estimate does not include people displaced before the attacks or the deaths. We do not know the routes, return, or long-term land results. This release has 532 cases and 542 playback stops.

Research

Research review: Florida mission destruction

·

The second case beyond the first list has a research review. It is about attacks on Florida mission communities from 1702 to 1706. The case is not in the public atlas or active data set. One count says the attacks took about 1,000 captives. The record does not use the later Seminole name for those older groups.

Research

Research review: a missed Pacific history

·

The search beyond the first list found its first case that completed research review. It is about the conquest of Lau by Maʻafu from 1852 to 1869. The case stays out of the public atlas and active data set. Its record has three phases and 29 unknown fields. Separate Mago and Munia or Yanuyanu questions do not have decisions.

Atlas release

New public case: Sierra Leone

·

We added the Sierra Leone case, from 1991 to 2002. It is about flight in the civil war. The text has details on flight within the state and refuge across borders. It also has details on return and flight after return. Commission statement counts are not totals for all people. This release has 531 cases and 541 playback stops.

Atlas release

New public case: Equatorial Guinea

·

The live atlas now has the Macías Nguema dictatorship and mass exile from Equatorial Guinea from 1968 to 1979. The case is about political flight, blocked return, and children born in exile. It gives each estimate with its date. The source does not confirm claims of forced plantation labor. This release has 530 cases across 540 playback stops.

Research

Discovery work starts again to find absent histories

·

We started the project again to find histories absent from the first event list. The new search starts with places and periods with fewer atlas cases. Each case needs a real source location before review. Open leads stay visible. This method makes no claim that the atlas covers all history.

Site release

Map credits move into the site interface

·

The live atlas removed the fixed Santiago coastline notice. A start-up credit and a permanent Map credits control now carry OpenStreetMap, ODbL, and Natural Earth attribution. This release has 438 cases across 448 playback stops. At that date, 176 known cases still needed text. Another 62 cases had holds. The update did not change the 676-event statistical release.
